The 41-year-old ‘Since You’ve Been Gone’ singer said she spent years not dealing with her emotions and her English teacher mother Jeanne told her if she couldn’t bear to talk about them she had better put them down on paper.

Kelly, who has two children with her 46-year-old former husband Brandon Blackstock, told broadcast platform Audacy: “I kept everything in, and I bottled it, and then I blow up.

“The best thing, and greatest thing, my mother ever did for me was shove paper and pen in front of me and go, ‘If you’re not gonna talk about it, you need to write about it…’ – and that is how I became a writer.”

She added she now speaks to her daughter River Rose, nine, and son Remington ‘Remy’ Alexander, seven, about their mental health, saying: “They’re very good at expressing themselves.”

Kelly chatted to Audacy to mark its 10th annual We Can Survive concert on Saturday. (14.10.23)

Along with her performance, the show featured sets by Maroon 5, One Republic, David Kushner and Izza.

Kelly recently said she isn’t looking for love in the wake of her divorce from Brandon.

She filed for a split from the businessman in June 2020 after nearly seven years of marriage, and told fans during an Instagram Live in September: “Do I have a boyfriend? No! And not looking. You know why? I love being single.

“I have two kids, two dogs, three rabbits, a hamster, multiple jobs – there’s a lot going on.

“And, you know, you think you’re going to spend the rest of your life with somebody, and you don’t. That’s hard to start over.”

Not long after splitting from Brandon, Kelly moved to New York City with their children to host her self-titled talk show.

She joked in December 2021 she would be “single forever” after going through such a tumultuous divorce.

And during an episode of ‘The Kelly Clarkson Show’, the singer admitted she struggles to spot “red flags” in her partners, which she said led to her taking a break from dating.

She added: “I’m always that person that’s like, ‘Oh, I don’t know. Maybe they were having an off day’.”

Kelly has also said her move to New York has helped get her back on her feet.

She released a bitter break-up album earlier this year called ‘Chemistry’ that detailed the “good, the bad and the ugly” of her relationship with Brandon.

On Thursday (21.09.23) she released an extended version of the record with five new tracks.
