The 47-year-old filmmaker suffered a life threatening heart attack earlier this year after having a severe blockage in his artery, and has said that after his life was saved by doctors, he has embarked on a vegan diet in order to reduce his cholesterol levels.

Speaking to E! News, he said: "After the heart attack, I talked to the nutritionist in the hospital the next day and the nutritionist was like 'Well you might want to think about going on a diet. Maybe go plant based, because that will get rid of a lot of your cholesterol, it's been proven.'

"So that's what I did. I said, 'You know what? I ate any way I wanted for like the last 47 years. For one year I am going to try life as a vegan.' So that's what I did, and I've been vegan for five months. I used to be happy, now I'm a f***ing vegan. But it's been okay, I don't miss much."

The 'Clerks' creator has been vocal about his health in the months since his heart attack, and recently said changes to his diet have left him feeling "fantastic".

He said: "I feel fantastic. I had a heart attack, two months of change ago. They opened up my LAD, which sounds sexy but its the widow maker artery. It's the third artery that runs across the front of your heart and it with the most blood and oxygen. That was 100 blocked, so this doctor f***ing cut a hole in my crotch, right next to my d**k, reached up my groin - probably with a device but in my mind with his hand - went up to my femoral artery and my heart, found the blockage, and opened that s**t up. And then suddenly the blood was flowing for the first time in who knows how long. 100 percent blockage over years, the blood must have gotten slower and slower to the point where it blocked, and that's why I had a massive heart attack. But suddenly I felt a thousand times better."
