Strictly Come Dancing star Kristina Kristina Rihanoff says the collapse of the Soviet Union makes her tight with money.

Petite blonde Kristina says she would not squander her ballroom earnings on expensive handbags and a lavish lifestyle because the financial crisis in her native of Russia when she was growing up has taught her how to be very stringent with cash.

Kristina – who grew up under a communist regime revealed: “My parents didn’t have much money…at that time it was still the Soviet Union so everyone was paid the same by the government…we managed OK but it taught me to be very careful with money.”

Recalling her childhood she says, “I was about 12 or 13 when [the collapse] happened and it was a very scary moment for everyone because everything people knew fell apart. People’s hard-earned savings disappeared. The banks and everything crashed.”

Now 36-year-old she joined ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ in 2008, after appearing on the American equivelent ‘Dancing with the Stars’ and despite her sensible spending habits, she admits she has fallen victim to the odd splurge.

“My worst decision was in the US, when I just started making money I bought myself a car, an amazing beautiful convertible sports car and I loved it. It was a 350Z Nissan, which I owned for a year and then I moved to London, so I had to sell it and I made a loss on that.”
