The 'Alejandro' hitmaker has been linked with a role in the upcoming movie remake for several months, and she has now said she is "elated" to be making her big screen debut in Bradley Cooper's first directorial effort.

She tweeted: "Im elated to be directed by & starring w/ Bradley in this project. He's a brilliant visionary artist. #AStarIsBorn #AStarIsBornCooperGaga (sic)"

And fans worried movie-making will impact on Gaga's career don't need to worry, as the 30-year-old star will be writing and composing new tracks for the film.

'A Star is Born' tells the tale of an aspiring young singer and her mentor and lover, whose popularity is heading in the opposite direction.

As well as getting behind the camera, Bradley will also be taking the male lead in the film, a role which previously had the likes of Will Smith, Tom Cruise and Leonardo DiCaprio in the frame.

Meanwhile, Beyonce was originally eyed for the part that has gone to Gaga.

Clint Eastwood was originally in the director's chair, but he will now produce alongside his business partner Todd Phillips, and Bill Gerber and Jon Peters.

This will be the fourth production of 'A Star is Born', which saw Janet Gaynor and Fredric March star in the 1937 original.

Judy Garland and James Mason appeared in another version in 1954, while the most recent movie, in 1976, saw Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson in the lead roles.

A release date has yet to be set for the movie by studio Warner Bros..

Meanwhile, Gaga - who received a Golden Globe Award at this year's star studded bash for her portrayal of hotel owner Elizabeth/ The Countess in the television series 'American Horror Story: Hotel' - is set to reprise her role for the sixth season of the FX horror television series, which was announced in March this year.
