The 'Independence Day: Resurgence' star - who has rekindled his romance with fiancée Miley Cyrus - prefers to keep his personal life away from the spotlight.

He said: "I just want people to be respectful of my privacy. I don't go out of my way to attract that kind of attention, or feel I owe anyone a show and tell. Some [other celebrities] don't mind, but I like to keep my personal life apart and keep the noise at bay.

"That sort of attention eats away at you at first. I read things people made up, or horrible things that are really alienating. But the thing is, if you read that one negative thing among the 100 positives, you have to remind yourself everyone else on the planet is thinking about their own s**t.

"You can be consumed by, 'Oh, someone wrote something about me', but you have to remember it's 10 seconds out of someone's day, if that. That makes it easier. I don't buy into it anymore, and live my life happily. It's way less complicated."

And the 26-year-old actor - who hails from Melbourne, Australia - loves returning home to see his pals as it keeps him grounded.

He told Australia's Sunday Style magazine: "You know what I love about going back to Phillip Island and hanging out with my old friends? They're not impressed by it all; they're oblivious to most of it. They've seen some of the movies I've done, but no one treats me differently. It's, 'Oh yeah, mate, that was good. Wanna go for a surf?'

"Yeah, it's good [to come back]. That's why I love seeing everyone I grew up with. It's no different even though I've been here seven years and time has passed. One of my best friends has three kids now. I'll hang out with them and hold his baby. Life is so different, but when we're together the relationships are the same. I get back home Christmas and New Year's ... I really care about those lives."
