Miley Cyrus' homeless friend has handed himself in to the police.

Jesse Helt, who accepted the pop star's Video of the Year award at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, turned himself in at a local police station in Dallas, Oregon, on Thursday and posted $2,500 bail after it emerged he has an outstanding warrant for his arrest dating back to November 2011.

Miley's 22 year old pal, who opened up about being homeless in Los Angeles during a moving speech at the VMAs, is wanted for violating the terms of his probation stemming from an earlier arrest in which he pleaded guilty to misdemeanour criminal mischief and criminal trespass after breaking into the home of a man he claimed had sold bad marijuana. Jesse was sentenced to 30 days in jail and given probation, but broke the terms of his freedom, resulting in the arrest order.

Martin Silbernagel, director of community corrections at Polk County jail, said: "He turned himself in and was arrested; we expect a court date in two weeks."

Meanwhile, it seems Miley, 21, will help Jesse pay for his legal fees, according to her friend Trevor Neilson who first introduced her to the homeless youngster.

Trevor said: "Jesse Helt turned himself in to Polk County authorities to address his outstanding legal issues. Miley Cyrus will be assisting him with this process, and they both are committed to working to help the other 1.6 million youth who experience homelessness in America each year."
