Naya Rivera has issued an apology for any offence caused when she said she thinks showering every day is a "white people thing".

The singer caused controversy during her appearance on The View this Tuesday, January 14, when she said she believes "white people" shower "a lot more than ethnics", but now says she's sorry if she offended anyone because it was only meant as a "joke".

Speaking again on the show on Wednesday, January 15, she explained: "It was supposed to be a joke. I apologise if anyone was offended.

"I said that I thought that showering multiple times in a day was such a white person thing.

"Yesterday we were talking about a study that says we are supposed to shower I guess once or twice every three days which I had an opinion on, it which was supposed to be a joke but apparently didn't go over so well.

"However, I'm very excited that it sparked a big conversation about how many times you should shower."

The Glee star's comments didn't go down well with those on social media including Twitter users who took to the site to express their disapproval.

_Veise: wrote: "I'ma tell you now, Naya Rivera is incorrect. She is wrong. Ethnic folk do not shower less than White people. (sic)"

LovesModChic tweeted: "I'm still not over Naya Rivera's renk batty self saying that "ethnic" people don't shower daily because SHE showers every 3 days, girl what? (sic)"

Naya's comment came because she said she only showers once or twice every three days, whilst her husband Ryan Dorsey prefers to get clean on a more regular basis.

"I think that white people shower a lot more than ethnics. I feel like showering more than once a day or every day is such a white people thing."

Rosie O'Donnell - the show's co-host - said of someone in the audience: "There's an African-American woman in a yellow shirt who is about to have a heart attack."

Naya then directed further comments in the direction of the shocked woman.

"My mom is half-black, half-Puerto Rican. She showers every day, so I can say this. But I can say I'm now married to a white man and he showers a lot. A lot. Like two, three times a day. I'm like, 'What are you doing?'

"A dermatologist says you're only supposed to shower once or twice every three days so I'm right on the mark.

"If you bird bath everything important gets cleaned, you don't need a dunking."
