The 33-year-old pop star already has a string of hits under his belt as part of Years and Years but now an insider has claimed that he could follow on from Mae Muller - who entered the international competition with 'I Wrote A Song' but ultimately came second last - and is said to have teamed up with Danny L Harle, who works as a producer with Dua Lipa.

A source told The Sun newspaper's Bizarre column: "It’s a dream come true for Olly. Things aren’t quite locked in but he is a favourite with bosses. Despite everyone loving Mae, it’s no secret that everyone was disappointed with how things panned out.

"Olly has said for ages he wants to have a crack at it — and after teaming up with Danny for the song he thinks we have a great shot."

The insider went on to add that the 'Starstruck' hitmaker is aware that some people may claim that he is "too established" to try his luck at the contest, but downplayed that theory as simply being a form of "snobbery."

The source said: "He is aware people say that no established act in their right mind would go on the show due to the UK’s track record but as far as he is concerned that’s just snobbery."

Since finishing in a low position earlier in Eurovision this year, Mae insisted that she has "laughed it off" despite initially making a TikTok where she implied that she did not want to talk about the situation.

She told BBC Newsbeat: "When I made that TikTok I was still spiralling. I was like, 'Oh my God, my life is over'. But I knew I had to address it in my own way. I didn't want it to be a 'doom and gloom moment' because I can't deal with people pitying me. The second I did that, everyone laughed it off with me and it highlighted it's not the end of the world."
