The 'Sisters' actress confessed that she was a bit of a bully during her formative years and can relate to the bitchy character Regina George, from the popular movie which starred Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams as warring school friends.

Asked if she was the mean girl of her school, she said: "I was. I admit it openly."

And when quizzed on what drove her to it, she shared: "That was a disease that had to be conquered. It's another coping mechanism, it's a bad coping mechanism, but when you feel less (than others) in your mind, it's a way of leveling the playing field. Though of course it's not."

Meanwhile, the mother of two young daughters says she realised the error of her ways but feels a tingle of fear when she comes across a youngster who is like her old self.

She told Net-a-Porter's The Edit: "Saying something terrible about someone else does not actually level the playing field... If I meet a girl of 14 or 15 today who is that kind of girl, I am secretly, in my body, afraid. Even though I'm 45."
