Winona Ryder dropped out of school because she was bullied.

The 42-year-old actress, who has been in a relationship with fashion designer Scott Mackinlay Hahn for two years, has revealed she left Kenilworth Junior High School in Petaluma, California, when she was younger after some of her fellow students mistook her for a boy and hurled homophobic slurs at her.

The 'Black Swan' star told V magazine: "The lore! That did happen. I was obsessed with Bugsy Malone and had cut my hair short. I remember the halls were empty and these kids started shouting 'f****t.'"

The Golden Globe winner's parents, Michael and Cynthia Horowitz, decided to educate her at home after the incident, which led to her developing a love for film.

She said: "It's almost weird fate that it happened that way."

Winona previously revealed that she no longer cares what people think about her and doesn't feel under pressure to look a certain way in Hollywood.

The 'Homefront' star said: "I haven't really had to think about it very much because I was always lucky enough to be the waify sort of girl so I didn't have to worry about my weight.

"I'm still small, but in the last couple of years I've realised that it's probably time to start working a little bit more on my body, which is something I could put off when I was younger.

"So I've starred to exercise and I do try to eat relatively well, although I must confess that it doesn't always happen."
