Chicago is one of the longest running shows in the West End, spanning it performances over 15 years. It is a multi-award winning show directed by Barry Weissler and his wife Fran in the New York production that has encouraged the film starring Richard Gere, Renee Zelwegger and Catherine Zeta Jones. John Cander produced the show that began its life in the Adelphi theatre on 18th November 1997 and proved to be an instant hit with the viewers, with its glitzy costumes and catchy tunes.
It won the 1998 Laurence Olivier Award ‘Outstanding Musical Production Award’ and the 1998 Critics Circle Drama Award for ‘Best Musical.’ It moved from the Adelphi theatre to the Cambridge Theatre in Aril 2006. Its duration there was only 5 years before if opened in the Garrick Theatre in November 2011. This is where it will stay until it finishes in September 2012.
Since it was introduced in the UK its travelled around the world to Belgium, The Netherlands, Austria, Germany, Ireland, Scotland, Switzerland, Italy, France, Portugal, Greece, Israel, Russia, South Africa, China, Japan, South Korea, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Australia, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates. It has also been performed many different languages in English, Dutch, German, Swedish, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Italian and French
It has attracted many well-known stars to hit the stage, such as Alison Moyet, America Ferrera, Anita Dobson, Aoife Mulholland, Ashlee Simpson, Bonnie Langford, Brooke Shields, Chita Rivera, Christie Brinkley, Claire Sweeney, Clive Rowe, Darius Danesh, David Hasselhoff, Denise Van Outen, Gaby Roslin, Ian Kelsey, Jennifer Ellison, Jill Halfpenny, Joel Grey, John Barrowman, Kelly Osbourne, Kevin Richardson, Leigh Zimmerman, Les Denis, Lynda Carter, Maria Friedman, Marti Pellow, Michael French, Michael Greco, Michelle Williams, Peter Davison, Raza Jaffrey, Sacha Distel, Tina Arena and Tony Hadley.
Chicago, will still however carry on touring around the UK so you will still be able to see productions in places such as Cardiff, Truro, Torquay, Nottingham, Dublin, Aberdeen, Milton Keynes, Sheffield, Woking, Preston, Belfast, Derry, Crawley, Oxford, Canterbury, Glasgow, Plymouth, Cambridge and Dunfermline. It will still play on Broadway and around the world in multiple languages.
The cast will be joined by Robin Cousins who will play the part of Billy Flynn from 17 July 2012. Robin breaks the mould as he is the first Olympian to star in a theatre production whilst also being in the city in which it’s being hosted. He will be joined by Sarah Soetaert as Roxie Hart, Rachel McDowall as Velma Kelly, Tony Timberlake as Amos Hart and Jasna Ivir as Matron "Mama" Morton.
Since 1997 the box office has taken more than a modest sum of 120 million for eager customers and has taken 1 billion throughout the world. Figures show that 15,000 performances have been shown worldwide and 17 million people have watched it at the theatre.
It is one of only six musicals to have lasted over 15 years of performance, which include Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Blood Brothers, Cats and Starlight Express.
