The Dark Knight Rises DVD

Director: Christopher Nolan

Rating: 5/5

The Dark Knight Rises was one of the most highly anticipated movies of 2012 as Christopher Nolan returned to the Batman franchise for the first time since 2008.

Not only did the movie mark his return to batman but it would also bring his time at the helm of this franchise to a close.

Fans may have had to wait four long years for the third instalment but it was well worth the wait as The Dark Knight Rises remains one of the best movies of the year - not to mention it took over $1 billion at the global box office.

It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good.

For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act.

But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane.

Ok so this movie doesn’t quite hit the dizzy height of The Dark Knight but it is still bloody good and brings the trilogy to an epic conclusion.

Nolan keeps the dark and dangerous feel of the previous two movies well and truly in tact while he introduces some great and intriguing new characters.

Tom Hardy delivers a fantastic performance as Bane and while this character will no doubt be forever compared to Heath Ledger’s performance of the Joker you have to remember that this is a completely different character.

Hardy has piled on the bulk for the role and he really is an intimidating presence who commands the screen whenever he is on the screen.

The scenes where Bane and Batman go head to head really are the best in the movie as the fight scenes are truly brutal.

Speaking of Batman actor Christian Bale delivers another great performance as the caped crusader as we see a side of this character that we have never seen before - he really is a broken man at the beginning of the film.

He has suffered physically from his exploits as Batman and emotionally/personally after the death of Rachel Dawes in the previous movie. Wayne goes on his greatest and most personal journey yet as Batman again called into action when Bane threatens the people of Gotham City.

The Dark Knight Rises is everything that you would expect from a blockbuster as it is packed with action from start to finish not to mention it looks fantastic.

Christopher Nolan has put his stamp on the batman franchise even since he took over the helm and it is sad to see him leave this series behind - whoever directs the next Batman movie as some huge shoes to fill.
