The David Nicholls novel One Day has enjoyed huge success and gained an army of fans since it was published back in 2009.

And Nicholls was on hand to adapt his own novel for the big screen last year, which saw Lone Scherfig in the director’s chair.

The movie follows the story of Emma (Hathaway) and Dexter (Sturgess), who meet on the day of their university graduation, July 15th 1988, the film catches up with the pair on the same day for the next 20 years as they experience the highs and lows of adulthood both together and apart.

As their lives go separate ways, Emma and Dex strive to live their dreams experiencing hardship, success and compromise along the way.

One Day is a really touching story of friendship through the years that survives against all the odds and even the toughest times and the

There is a real connection between Anne Hathaway as the awkward Emma and Jim Sturgess as the uber confident Dex - there is a genuine and warm chemistry that really is the heart of this movie.

There’s plenty of witty banter between the two of them and you find yourself hoping they will eventually see what is right before them.

Rafe Spall is also superb as Ian, a boyfriend of Emma’s, and he really brings the comic element to the movie.

However the movie doesn’t pack nearly as much an emotional punch as the book - which I think it a major shame.

Also there is major tension between Dex and his father, played by Ken Stott, throughout nearly all of the movie and that is never really explored. And he loses his mother to cancer and that is all but glossed over which, I have to admit, I don’t really quite understand.

Not to mention that the pacing of the movie just isn’t quite right as it jumps from year to year it’s just incredibly clunky as opposed to a seamless transition.

But what is so great to see it they haven’t changed the rather tragic ending to this tale - which is rather refreshing it has to be said.

The final scenes really are quite uplifting as we are left with the aftermath of their first night together and the promise of a long friendship - which is just such an upbeat and positive way to end this movie.

I did enjoy One Day it’s a great look about how friendship and love can endure and change over many years - not to mention that Hathaway and Sturgess are pitch perfect as Emma and Dex.
