Alec Baldwin has hinted that he may run for Mayor his native New York.

The news comes following the sex scandal surrounding local politician Anthony Wiener who hit the headlines after he admitted to sending a saucy picture to a female student via his Twitter account.

Wiener since confessed to indulging in intimate phone and internet chats with several woman.

The controversy is rumoured to have prompted Baldwin to consider changing his acting career for a political one, which will see him run in the 2013 election as a Democrat to take over from current mayor Michael Bloomberg.

A source close to the 30 Rock star tells TheDaily.com, "Alec said, 'Hey, maybe this changes the race.' The dynamics have shifted. The Democrats need a high-profile candidate and Alec can fill that bill."

The star also took to his Twitter account yesterday to set the rumours straight, hinting that he could possibly be running for Mayor but that he wasn’t going to get too ahead of himself. He wrote, “It’s a long way till November of 2013.”

The star recently revealed that retirement was on the cards and that he will not be renewing his 30 Rock contract when it expires in 2012.

Despite the talk of retirement Baldwin’s representative, Matthew Hiltzik, didn’t deny the possibly of a run for Baldwin in the mayoral elections. He tells the New York Daily News, “I wouldn’t rule it out.”
