Cindy Crawford and her husband Rande Gerber have praised those responsible for putting a sick blackmailer behind bars.

Edis Kayalar, 26, was charged with attempting to extort $100,000 from the couple after threatening to sell a photo of their young daughter, Kaia Jordan, tied to a chair to the media.

The seven year old was reportedly playing a game at home when the picture was taken by a nanny.

The news of the blackmail attempt broke last year (09) after Gerber reportedly paid Kayalar $1,000 to keep the photo away from the media, but he turned to officials at America's Federal Bureau of Investigation when the extortionist made further demands for cash.

Kayalar fled the U.S. in September (09) but surrendered himself to police in Germany in November (09) after U.S. authorities appealed for international help in tracking him down.

He was convicted of attempted blackmail at a court in Germany on Tuesday (09Mar10) and handed a two-year prison sentence.

Crawford and Gerber spoke out on Wednesday (10Mar10), thanking officials for bringing the case to a swift conclusion.

A statement released by the pair reads: "We want to express our gratitude to the FBI, the U.S. District Attorney's Office in Los Angeles and the German law-enforcement authorities for their co-ordination and efforts in this case."
