Cynthia Nixon was honoured at the GLAAD Media Awards in New York on Saturday night (13Mar10) for her work promoting gay rights.
   
The actress, who 'came out' as a lesbian after splitting from long-time partner Danny Mozes in 2003, was handed the Vito Russo Award at the ceremony organised by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).
   
The prize is presented to stars who make a significant difference in promoting equal rights for the gay community.
   
Other winners at the event, hosted by actor Alan Cumming, included TV drama series Brothers & Sisters and The Oprah Winfrey Show which were saluted for a showing fair, accurate and inclusive representation of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
 
The View host Joy Behar received the Excellence in Media Award.

Nixon is back on the big screen later this year as she reprises the role of Miranda Hobbes in the second Sex and the City movie.
