The Duke & Duchess Of Cambridge

The Duke & Duchess Of Cambridge

The Duke & Duchess Of Cambridge came face-to-face with protesters during their trip to Canada on Saturday (02Jul11) as republican campaigners targeted the newlyweds during their visit to a children's hospital in Montreal.

Prince William and his new bride, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, are in the country on their first official state visit, and after enjoying the Canada Day festivities in Ottawa on Friday (01Jul11), they travelled on to Montreal in Quebec.

But their visit was marred by demonstrations outside the Sainte-Justine University Hospital as protesters jeered the couple and held up placards emblazoned with slogans including "Royal parasites! Go Home!".

The protests come amid anger over the costs of the royal visit, much of which is being paid for by the Canadian government.

At the hospital, the couple visited sick children in the cancer care centre before going on to visit the Quebec Tourism and Hotel Institute, where they were given a cookery lesson.

They are expected to visit Quebec City on Sunday (03Jul11), where more protests are expected from members of the Quebec Resistance Network, a pro-independence group.
