TV personality Jerry Springer is swapping the small screen for the London stage - he's to tread the boards in a production of Chicago.

The former politician quit his job as host of hit U.S. TV series America's Got Talent earlier this month (Feb09).

He will now tackle the role of lawyer Billy Flynn in the West End show, and is starting singing lessons to help him prepare for the demanding musical.

He says, "You don't need a Pavarotti for that role. I think I can carry a tune.

"I'm going to try to respect the traditions of the theatre and of the show.

"I'm going to work hard at it, I'm going to really rehearse and give it my best."

Springer's six-week run in the show will kick off in June (09).
