Michael Moore has publicly called on Matt Damon to run for U.S. president next year (12) after praising the Hollywood actor for taking a "courageous" stand against key political issues.

The Bourne Identity star joined a teachers' protest in Washington, D.C. last month (Jul11) to rally against standardised testing, and he recently voiced his disgust at the way politicians were stalling on a deal to raise the U.S. national debt ceiling.

Damon's outspoken behaviour has caught the eye of documentary maker Moore and he's convinced the Oscar winner would be an ideal candidate for the Democrats to run for office - and win - in 2012.

During an online discussion for FireDogLake.com on Sunday (07Aug11), Moore said, "I think that he's been very courageous and not caring about who he offends by coming out and saying the things that need to be said here.

"If you wanna win, the Republicans have certainly shown the way that when you run someone who is popular you win; sometimes even when you run an actor, you win.

"I only throw his name out there because I'd like us to start thinking that way..."
