Penelope Cruz

Penelope Cruz is battling a bout of food poisoning in the south of France after arriving at the Cannes Film Festival to promote her new movies Nine and Broken Embraces.

The Spanish star was forced to cancel a promotional event on Monday (18May09) because she was feeling unwell, and now she's fighting to get fit so she can attend the premiere of Broken Embraces - her latest collaboration with director Pedro Almodovar - on Tuesday (19May09).

Explaining the actress' absence, Nine producer Weinstein told reporters on Monday, "Tomorrow night is her premiere for her movie. She is getting better and is seeing a doctor right now."

Broken Embraces is a highly anticipated movie at the festival as Penelope Cruz reunites with filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, who last worked together on Volver.

Reminiscent of 1950s hard-boiled American film noir, Broken Embraces follows a four-way tale of dangerous love, set between the 1990s and present day.

A man writes, lives and loves in darkness. Fourteen years before, he was in a brutal car crash on the island of Lanzarote. In the accident, he didn’t lose only his sight, he also lost Lena, the love of his life.

The film will compete in the In Competition category at the festival but faces tough competition from Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds and toast of Cannes Fish Rank.
