Rufus Wainwright has told newspapers about how he threw himself into performing charity concerts in the hope of saving his mother, Kate McGarrigle, who was battling cancer.

Wainwright, a Canadian singer/songwriter, performed a number of charity shows for cancer aid following his mothers diagnosis of a rare form of cancer in 2006.

McGarrigle, also a musician, died last year at the age of 63, despite Wainwrights best efforts to raise money and awareness, he even performed at London's prestigious Royal Albert Hall in aid of Cancer Research UK and his mum's foundation, the Kate McGarrigle Fund.

He tells NowToronto.com, "(My advocacy) coincided with the greatest tragedy of my life so far, which was my mother dying of cancer.

"When I started doing charity shows (before she passed away), there was a side of me that believed it would save her life.  "As I was able to (raise money), life threw me a situation: this is what you're really involved with, so, you know, look out!"
