Tom Selleck Warns Movie Bosses About Magnum P.I.

Tom Selleck is urging movie executives keen to adapt his hit TV series Magnum P.I. into a film to tread carefully - because the show is too important to become another shoot-'em-up blockbuster.

The actor admits he keeps hearing about a film version of the hit 1980s show but he hasn't been asked to be a part of it.

And he's reluctant to give any such project the thumbs up until he knows for sure it will honour the hit TV series and not mock it or his character.

He tells America's TV Guide magazine, "My fear is, we see too many examples of studios buying the rights to a franchise, then spending $100 million on explosives and trivialising and making fun of it.

"Magnum's in the Smithsonian (Museum), and for a very serious reason. It was the first show to portray Vietnam veterans in a positive light.

"I'm very proud of that."
