The 'Saving Mr. Banks' actor has praised a man named Tony for making New York City "even greater" after he found the plastic in the street and ensured its safe return.

Tom tweeted: "A guy named Tony found my credit card on the street in NYC and returned it! Tony! You make this city even greater! Thanx. HANX (sic)"

While the 58-year-old actor was thankful for the stranger's actions, he is also renowned for his own good deeds.

Last month, he surprised a group of Girl Scouts in San Francisco when he bought four boxes of cookies for them and donated an additional $20.

He even agreed to pose for photos with fans - but only if they also bought cookies from the girls.

Archana Appanna, whose daughter was one of the Scouts, said: "I'm still on cloud nine.

"He was so personable. So down to earth."

Last year, the 'Forrest Gump' actor invited cab driver Manny Anzalota to hang out with him backstage at his Broadway play 'Lucky Guy' after they hit it off during a ride, and the driver regularly sent his regards to the Hollywood legend when he picked up his acquaintances.
