Do aliens really exist? Plenty of us believe so, and are confident that the government are shielding us from information that would prove the very existence of intelligent life across the universe. The conspiracy we're taking a look at this week has alien life right at the centre, and is one that you've probably heard of many times in the past, if you're a conspiracy junkie worth your salt! Here, we'll be looking at the Roswell UFO incident...

A little history

In 1947, a United States Army Air Forces balloon crashed at a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico. Whilst the government and US military dismissed the "flying disc" as a conventional weather balloon, there were those who believed a cover-up was under-way to keep an alien spacecraft out of the public spotlight.

Some conspiracists say that the alien occupants of the ship had quickly been recovered by the military, before being hidden entirely. The US military always denied this, but shocked the world in the 1990s when they admitted they hadn't been entirely truthful.

At this time, two reports came out disclosing that the crashed object, whilst still a surveillance balloon, was used for a Project Mogul nuclear test.

Despite now being one of the most researched and as such, debunked conspiracy theories, Roswell continues to cause waves within the conspiracist community.

Is there evidence of a UFO?

Honestly? No, not a shred of evidence. Still, believers still hold firm and think that aliens crashed and were concealed as part of a government cover-up. The idea of a UFO spaceship crashing in America and quickly being removed by those in office is certainly a glamourous one that makes for an exciting story and conspiracy, but this is without a doubt one of the least credible claims in all of the conspiracies we've looked through.

Whilst witnesses in the past have claimed to have seen shady goings on, many of them were actually repeating accounts they were told by other people. Anybody who says they saw debris or an actual alien life force, have quickly been dismissed as untrustworthy.

The alien autopsy footage

Back in 1995, London-based video entrepreneur Ray Santilli released film footage that appeared to show an autopsy of an alien, which he claimed had been taken by a US military official shortly after the Roswell incident.

Over a decade after its release in 2006, he admitted that the video was "mostly" a reconstruction. However, still to this day, he says it was based entirely on genuine footage that has now been lost, as well as some surviving original frames. Of course, once he had admitted the footage was fake, he lost all hope of being deemed a credible source.

In conclusion...

It's highly unlikely that the government are hiding any alien presence from the incident at Roswell. Whilst they may not be releasing all of the details surrounding the surveillance balloon that did crash in the area, it's hard to believe that whatever did happen there came from another world.
