Bungie and Activision Publishing, Inc., announced yesterday (June 9) that the next large expansion in the Destiny universe would be titled Rise Of Iron.

Building upon the legacy and story already set out by Destiny and The Taken King, the new chapter will bring players back to the very roots of their adventure, enticing them to join one of Destiny's greatest heroes to battle an ancient enemy from the past.

That hero is described as "a legend from humanity's Golden Age", hoping "to defeat a plague of unstoppable evil once and for all".

CEO of Bungie, Pete Parsons comments: "Rise Of Iron is an exciting addition to the Destiny universe. We are continually blown away and inspired by the growing Destiny community's energy and enthusiasm."

Activision CEO, Eric Hirshberg adds: "We have been working hard with our partners at Bungie and are planning great, new content for Destiny's 30 million registered players. Rise Of Iron is the first step in fulfilling that promise.

"There's a ton of content packed in Rise Of Iron, including a new location, a new Raid and a new Strike, combined with more quests, weapons, gear, a competitive multiplayer mode and more that we think players are going to love."

The new content described includes a new setting on Earth called The Plaguelands, with the new six-player Raid taking place at Felwinter Peak, an all new social space looking out onto those Plaguelands.

There's also a Light level increase available, new maps and a new mutated enemy faction of the Fallen.

All players in Rise Of Iron will be able to acquire the Gjallarhorn, a fan favourite weapon which is now making its return. Those who pre-order will receive the limited edition black and silver Iron Gjallarhorn.
