Nintendo gamers will soon be able to play for the first time as My Melody - Hello Kitty - in 'SuperMario'.

Nintendo has teamed up with Japanese designer Sanrio to bring new Hello Kitty and My Melody costumes to the popular game.

Hello Kitty, a cat that wears a red bow in her hair, is Sanrio's most iconic and recognised symbol.

While not quite as popular, My Melody is a young female rabbit who sports a red (or pink) hood that covers her ears. Both fictional animals were created during the mid-1970s.

These costumes join those recently added, including Wolf Link, Midna, Nisekoi Chitoge Kirisaki and Ice Climbers Nana and Popo.

Nintendo News has confirmed the Hello Kitty and My Melody costumes will be available on Thursday May 26 via a new Event Course - initially for the US, followed by Europe and Japan on May 27.

'Super Mario Maker' is a Nintendo Wii U exclusive that came out last September and the game has been updated ever since by Ninety to keep things fresh.

Players are able to enhance and personalise the experience even further by creating their own custom levels based on previous 'Super Mario' titles, share them online and unlock more tools and characters.

Nintendo revealed over 7.2 million game courses have been created worldwide, with more than 600 million plays since the game was released.
