Magikarp Jump

The free to play mobile app - which comes from developers Select Button Inc. - is the latest in the long line of games released by The Pokemon Company, and is available to download from the iTunes app store and Google Play stores as of Wednesday (24.05.17).

'Magikarp Jump' challenges its players to catch the fish Pokemon - which is known in other games to be largely useless until it evolves into the might Gyarados - and train it to jump on land by levelling it up.

When a player's Magikarp gets knocked out or retires at level 20 - the level at which it would usually evolve - the game starts again with the player receiving a new generation version of the pocket monster, which is stronger than the one before.

The game's description reads: "When you do well in jumping tournaments, you can get commemorative photos of your achievement. You can share these photos online and with friends to show the world how well you've trained your Magikarp."

Like other free to play games released in connection with The Pokemon Company - such as 'Pokemon Duel', 'Pokemon Shuffle' and Niantic's 'Pokemon Go' - players can speed up their progress in the game by way of micro-transactions for items which help speed up training, replenish food stock, and customise Magikarp's surroundings.

'Magikarp Jump' was first announced by the company in February this year, when it was revealed a game named 'Hanero! Koiking' - which translated to 'Splash! Magikarp' - was due for release in Japan in Spring this year.

At the time, little was known about the game, except for its inclusion of the water-type Pokemon, as a teaser website for the game featured a picture of two Magikarp shaped holes in the ground.
