The 'Transformers' director is set to bring his talents to VR by collaborating with Los Angeles-based content developer The Rogue Initiative on the new project.

He is also set to join the company as a strategic advisor and Michael said: "I'm excited about building new visual worlds for this innovative medium with them.

Rogue's co-founder and CEO Pete Blumel added: "We're all absolutely thrilled to be working with such a cinematic powerhouse in the field of action entertainment."

According to a statement from the company, the project will be a "gritty, danger-close action coupled with Michael Bay's signature style".

Bay is directing the project while The Rogue Initiative is producing.

The director's strategic advisor role will see him working with fellow advisors Lynda Obst, producer; Matthew Cohan, president of Bay Films; Cliff Plumer, president of VR startup Jaunt Studios; and Cody Simms, executive director of Disney/TechStars.

According to The Hollywood Reporter: "Rogue Initiative intends to seek additional investment and strategic partnerships to develop a slate of VR, film and television projects for platforms and distribution channels including Sony Playstation, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Samsung GearVR, Netflix, Amazon and Hulu."
