The co-creator of the iconic beat em' up franchise and the team at NetherRealm Studios have been introducing horror icons as DLC for the 'Mortal Kombat' titles, with the most recent characters being the Xenomorph creature from 'Alien' and Leatherface from 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' for 'Mortal Kombat X'.

Other murderous villains to appear include 'Friday the 13th' psychopath Jason Vorhees, the 'Predator' alien and Freddy Krueger from 'A Nightmare on Elm Street', and Boon is ready to unleash all the big screen monsters in a new game.

In an interview with website Game Informer, he said: "You know, as we've been accumulating them, that idea has been coming up more and more frequently. People have been like, 'Why don't you do a horror movie fighting game?' Yes! Maybe one day we'll do it."

Boon also gave insight into how a character is selected to be made available as DLC and admits it usually starts with as an idea that everyone considers to be "outside" the box.

He shared: "The biggest way it happens is simply someone suggests someone. With 'Mortal Kombat', we stepped outside of the universe with characters like Freddy Krueger, Jason, Alien, Predator, and stuff like that, so the movie stuff kind of mixes things up. Fan feedback is another big one; just hearing some very loud, insistent people saying what they want. And what's available; obviously we can't just choose what we want to do, like, 'We want Robocop so he's in the game!' You have to do something that can be accommodated as far the company. So there are a number of variables, including what the players have been asking for. We're always listening to feedback ... I always think there's a novelty to it ... Alien and Predator in 'Mortal Kombat X' were the most downloaded of those."

NetherRealm's next game is 'Injustice 2' - which features DC Comics characters battling it out and is the sequel to the hugely popular iOS and Android title - which comes out in 2017 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
