Nintendo have confirmed that the mini version of the 1990s gaming device, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, will be available to purchase later this year.

The new device will have 21 pre-installed classic games including fan favourites such as 'Super Mario Kart', 'The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past' and 'Final Fantasy III'.

Other games available on the device include 'Contra III: The Alien Wars', 'Donkey Kong Country', 'EarthBound', 'Kirby Super Star' and 'Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars'.

The original SNES - which was launched in Japan in 1990 and made it over to the UK two years later - was the most successful console of the 16-bit video game era and sold more than 49 million devices.

The Nintendo Classic Mini: SNES will be released on September 29, with a US launch price of $79.99.

The release of the Nintendo Classic Mini: SNES comes hot on the heels of the unveiling of the Nintendo Switch, which quickly became the company's fastest-selling video game system ever in the US.

It sold 906,000 units in March, putting it ahead of the Wii U, which sold 890,000 in its first five weeks.

Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America's president and Chief Operating Officer, said at the time: "Nintendo always strives to offer consumers something fun, new and different.

"With its various play modes and the innovative features of the Joy-Con controllers, Nintendo Switch provides unique experiences that people can take with them anywhere and share with anyone."
