The Japanese video game giant is bringing the Nintendo Switch Online service out, which is slated for a 2018 release and will allow users to play a wide variety of iconic titles such as 'Super Mario Bros. 3', 'Dr. Mario' and 'Balloon Fight'.

On its website, a statement read: "You'll be able to play compatible co-op and competitive games online by signing in with your Nintendo Account.

"Online play will be free for Nintendo Account holders until our paid online service launches in 2018. Users can play as many of the games as they want, as often as they like, as long as they have an active subscription."

Although for now the service would only include NES games, Super NES titles could also be coming to the console.

The service follows on from the hugely successful Virtual Console service which was available on the Wii and Wii U.

The Nintendo Switch hit shops back in March and has been a commercial success with 2.74 million units being sold.
