The team-based multiplayer title was launched in May 2016 and since then, it has proven to be a major success across different platforms, including the PS4 and Xbox One.

The news of 'Overwatch's landmark achievement has been confirmed on Twitter, although the developer did not detail how the figures break down.

Despite being launched more than a year ago, the title continues to be popular among gamers, with 'Overwatch' having passed the 20 million figure by November 2016 and the 30 million mark by the end of April.

Last month, meanwhile, 'Overwatch' began to mute players who had gained a bad reputation.

The first-person shooter game had been dealing with problem players for some time and, as a result, the publishers at Blizzard teamed up with Xbox to create a new "Avoid Me" feature, which means anyone who finds themselves placed in that category will be unable to use the chat functions.

In a statement, Blizzard previously said: "Players whose Xbox Live reputation has been downgraded to 'Avoid Me' will remain in the same matchmaking pool as other 'Overwatch' players.

"However, they will no longer be able to use the in-game voice communication."
