'Pokemon Go' developer Niantic plans to introduce the ability to battle with friends.

The feature has been discussed almost since the hugely popular title was first released in 2016, but the developer has now finally given the proposal the go-ahead.

It has been confirmed, too, that iconic Pokemon are set to be made available for gaming enthusiasts to capture.

Speaking to Brazilian newspaper O Globo, Niantic executive Mathieu de Fayet said: "Right now we are working on some that are due to hit this summer, such as giving more value to the choice of the teams, releasing Legendary Pokemon and introducing PvP [player vs player]."

Meanwhile, Junichi Masuda, Pokemon's series producer, revealed last year that developers were already exploring the possibility of creating remakes of older 'Pokemon' games.

At the time, Junichi hinted that titles like 2004's 'Pokemon FireRed LeafGreen' could be released.

He said: "I think the remakes, like 'Pokemon FireRed' and 'LeafGreen', is still an approach we're interested in.

"With the Virtual Console releases of the original games, specifically there had never been a way to bring those Pokemon over to the latest generation. It had always been that you couldn't get those Pokemon out."
