The popular augmented reality mobile game has hinted that it might be introducing rare legendary Pokémon into the game as early as this summer, after Archit Bhargava of game developers Niantic gave a cryptic acceptance speech at the 21st Annual Webby Awards.

Speeches at the award show are usually limited to just five words, and Archit - who picked up five gongs for the game including Best Mobile Game - chose to tell audiences: "This summer will be legendary."

The inclusion of the word "legendary" has caused fans to speculate that Niantic intend on adding legendary Pokémon - which could include the likes of Mew and MewTwo - to the game later this year.

Rumours of legendary Pokémon appearing in the game have been circulating since last summer, when the rare creature Articuno was spotted - and later removed - from some players' games.

And Niantic CEO John Hanke was asked in March when players could expect to see legendary Pokémon in the game, to which he claimed the addition would be made "this year".

He said: "I can safely say we'll see more of it this year."

Meanwhile, 80 new Pokémon were added to the game back in February this year, when Niantic made it possible for players to capture some of the most popular Pokémon from the Johto region featured in the games 'Pokémon Gold' and 'Pokémon Silver'.

These Pokémon included the Johto region starters, Chikorita, Totodile, and Cyndaquil, as well as Togepi, Sudowoodo, Slowking, and Pichu, the pre-evolution to Pokemon's mascot Pikachu.
