The popular console was originally released in 2006 in response to the launch of Microsoft's Xbox 360 and it has proven to be a major hit with gamers, selling 80 million units worldwide as of 2013.

But according to IGN, production of the console has ended in Japan, bringing an end to the PlayStation 3's time on the video game landscape after it was usurped by the PlayStation 4 in 2013.

Sony has yet to publicly comment on the report, but earlier this week, the technology announced that the PlayStation E3 Experience is returning for 2017.

The firm has invited fans to join Sony in over 85 movie theatres across the United States, Canada, and Latin America, as the brand unveils some of its most exciting developments to the world.

The PlayStation blog explained: "This is the third year we're broadcasting our E3 Press Conference live to theaters across North America and I can't wait to bring the excitement of E3 straight to you. Watching the announcements and news alongside other members of the PlayStation community is an experience like no other (sic)"

Sony also revealed that anyone who attends the screenings will be handed some exciting gifts.

The blog noted: "Attendees will take home an exclusive poster and #76 from the PlayStation Collectable Card series. This will be the only way to get your hands on these, so don't miss out! Want more than just limited edition swag? We've got you covered - everyone will also get a digital gift basket chock-full of goodies from PlayStation Store."
