The upcoming western action-adventure game was supposed to launch for Playstation 4 and Xbox One users later this year, but game developers at Rockstar Games have pushed the release date back to Spring 2018 in order to make sure the game offers "the best experience possible" for players.

Posting a range of new screenshots on their website to tide fans over, Rockstar wrote: "'Red Dead Redemption 2' is now set to launch Spring 2018 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. This outlaw epic set across the vast and unforgiving American heartland will be the first Rockstar game created from the ground up for the latest generation of console hardware, and some extra time is necessary to ensure that we can deliver the best experience possible for our fans.

"We are very sorry for any disappointment this delay causes, but we are firm believers in delivering a game only when it is ready. We are really excited to bring you more details about the game this summer. In the meantime, please enjoy this selection of new screenshots from the world of 'Red Dead Redemption 2'."

The news comes after an image of a man with his legs and arms crossed - which is a unique trait from the NPC in the 'Red Dead Redemption 2' teaser trailer which was released last year - was leaked online earlier this month and caused speculation that the game was almost ready for release.

At the time, fans were unsure if the image was legit, or if it had been faked.

Meanwhile, Rockstar Games have yet to comment on whether the game - which is a sequel to the 2010 game 'Red Dead Redemption' - will get a PC port, although it seems unlikely.

The company have also denied plans for a port on the Nintendo Switch.
