The popular vehicular soccer game announced during its slot at E3 earlier this month that it would finally be enabling players on Xbox and Nintendo Switch consoles to play online together when it introduces cross-play support, but said those who own the game on PlayStation 4 would not be involved.

Now, game developers Psyonix have said the reason they left PlayStation out of the loop was because Sony - who develop the consoles - continuously turn down their requests.

Psyonix's Jeremy Dunham told Engadget: "There have been slight variations on how it's been presented to us, but essentially it's the same answer. It's, 'Not right now' or, 'It's something we'll consider.' That's paraphrasing, but there hasn't been any movement."

According to the publication, Jeremy also claimed that ever since 'Rocket League's launch on PlayStation 4 in 2015, at least one person at Psyonix has asked Sony about cross-play "every single day."

Meanwhile, 'Rocket League' isn't the only game that Sony have refused to allow cross-platform support on, as 'Minecraft' will also only support cross-platform play on Nintendo Switch and Xbox consoles.

At E3, Sony's Jim Ryan claimed the decision to steer clear of cross-platform comes as it would mean allowing their users to connect to a network outside of its own, which could pose safety concerns for younger users.

He said: "We've got to be mindful of our responsibility to our install base. 'Minecraft' - the demographic playing that ... it's all ages but it's also very young. We have a contract with the people who go online with us, that we look after them and they are within the PlayStation curated universe. Exposing what in many cases are children to external influences we have no ability to manage or look after, it's something we have to think about very carefully."
