The company - which publishes games including 'Sonic the Hedgehog' and 'Total War' - has joined forces with the IOC to work on a number of games for the upcoming event in Tokyo.

Sega said in a statement that it applied for the licence because the Olympic Games have a global appeal that "draws everyone's attention" and the company has the "accumulated experience and knowhow" to do the job.

Haruki Satomi, CEO of Sega Games, said: "It is truly an honour for us to be granted this Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 sub-license from ISM. SEGA will provide exciting video games for Tokyo 2020 leveraging the experience of developing Entertainment Software for past Olympic Games."

Raymond Goldsmith, chairman and CEO of ISM, added: "We are delighted to extend the relationship with SEGA. Their accumulated experience with developing entertainment software for the Olympic Games will ensure the official Tokyo 2020 video games entertain people all over the world, and help support the global appeal of Tokyo 2020."

Sega has previously developed games for the Beijing 2008, London 2012, and Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games and the Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will run from July 24 to August 09, 2020.
