The two iconic titles - which were released on the Mega Drive console - are being lined up by Stories International - the production arm of Sega Group and Hakuhodo DY Group.

Stories International is to team with 'Fear the Walking Dead' producers Circle of Confusion on the adaptations.

If the two movies are successful then there are plans to turn other famous gaming franchises such as 'Shinobi', 'Golden Axe', 'Virtua Fighter', 'Crazy Taxi' and 'The House of the Dead' into TV shows or films.

Circle of Confusion partner Lawrence Mattis said: "These are some of the most well-loved Sega games, and we're thrilled to be working with Stories to adapt them into major film and television franchises."

Stories International and Circle of Confusion intend to hire "major studios, producers, and filmmakers" to co-develop the film and television adaptations.

Side-on beat 'em up 'Streets of Rage' was released in 1991 and let one or two players choose to fight as Axel Stone, Blaze Fielding and Adam Hunter against crime boss Mr. X.

The game is considered one of the best ever examples of the genre and spawned two sequels.

'Altered Beast' is another beat 'em up and is set in Ancient Greece with the player controlling a centurion who is resurrected by Zeus to rescue his daughter Athena, and has the ability to turn into a variety of beasts, including a werewolf, via power-ups.

It was originally an arcade game and was later ported onto the Sega Mega Drive and Sega Master System consoles as well as other home entertainment machines.
