The 32-year-old actress is known for playing Elsie Hughes on the hit HBO drama series 'Westworld', and has confirmed via a Twitter post that she will be taking on an as yet unannounced role in the upcoming sequel to the massively popular survival horror game.

Posting a picture of herself with the game's director Neil Druckmann, Shannon wrote on the social media site: I am embarrassingly over-excited here because I'm peaking. @Neil_Druckmann is letting me act in The Last Of Us:Part II . (sic)"

Shannon's role in the video game will see her reunite with 'Westworld' director Halley Gross, as she co-wrote the story for the game alongside Neil.

Development of 'The Last Of Us: Part II' began in 2014, a year after the release of the first instalment.

A first trailer for the game - which is developed by Naughty Dog - revealed the story will continue to follow main characters Ellie and Joel, and will take place five years after the end of the first game.

Players will assume the control of Ellie - a young girl who appears to be immune to the infection which took hold of the population and threw her and Joel into a post-apocalyptic world - in contrast to the first game, where players controlled the actions of Joel.

No release date has yet been confirmed for the game, but the game will be available for the PlayStation 4, following on from the first game's release on the PlayStation 3.
