The countdown has well and truly begun for this years Christmas festivities; the decorations are up, advent calendars are being opened and gifts are being bought.

But finding the perfect present can be difficult, particularly with time rapidly running out.

To help out with this predicament, Europe’s largest personalised gifting company, Vistaprint.co.uk, has teamed up with TV presenter and mother of two, Andrea McLean to demonstrate how a personalised photo gift can be one of the most memorable presents to give to that special friend or family member.

However, it is important to capture great photos to be able to create picture perfect gifts.

In this video Andrea, with the help of professional photographer to the stars Ian Derry, explains how you can produce your own personal and thoughtful photographic gifts that recipients will love, from the comfort of your own home.

Ian Derry, who has been working as a photographer for more than thirty years has given his five golden rules for photographic success to ensure you get the most from your photo gifts.

- PREPARE - Plan in your head where and when the best shots are going to be and be ready. Make sure you have the camera set for the situation so you don't miss the shot.

- SELECTION - Try to vary your shots and make sure you get a nice selection of images to choose from.

This can help change the pace when flicking through a photo album or personalised photo book, which makes it more exciting than lots of the same type of pictures.

- TURN OFF THE FLASH - Switch off the flash on your camera, use a low light setting and be less intrusive. This way people will forget you are taking pictures and things will be more natural, making the photo more real.

- TAKE MORE THAN YOU NEED TO - Don't just take one or two shots, take a whole load. When you look back at them you will see how different they all are and how sometimes your first shot can be improved upon.

The beauty of modern cameras is that you can be ruthless and delete the photos you don’t want.

- SET SHOTS UP - As well as the happy moments and the candid off camera shots, take the time to set shots up too.

Use these tips above to create inspiring and thoughtful gifts for you friends and family.

A practical wall calendar featuring photos of your children or a beautiful photo book is a great way to capture the pictures you’ve taken over the last year.
