Whilst a lot of people do use their garage for its true purpose, storing their car, there are many who treat it as an extra spare room, and fill with boxes of stuff that will never get used. Check out these great decorating tips to do with your garage, and you might want to start parking your car on the drive.

First things first: if you're going to make your garage into a habitable room, you'll need to undertake some serious work. It's likely your garage floor will be just concrete, and probably fairly uneven concrete, so you may need to get a new floor put in.

You'll also need to look at getting windows put in to bring light to the garage, and you may need to get the walls insulated. Always check with a professional before undertaking DIY work like this.

If you work from home, you could transform your garage into a home office. It could make a great place to work, as you'll feel slightly cut off from the rest of the house, so you'll be able to get on with your work undisturbed. Put down floorboards and a large rug for an open plan yet business feel, and get a filing cabinet to keep all your work in.

You'll also have to make sure that the garage has an electricity supply, so you can plug in your laptop.

You can also convert your garage into a personal gym, so you can work out in the comfort of your own home. Get a TV mounted on the wall to inspire you while you're on the treadmill, and put in a cold water dispenser, then you can refresh yourself after your exercise.

Another idea is to turn it into a snug, or TV room. If your kids are constantly pestering for a tree house, or if you just want somewhere to relax, then this could be a great project for you.

Get some really comfy furniture so you can settle down after a long day, and if the room is going to be mainly for the kids, make sure everything has been childproofed. Put down a really soft carpet, and get an electric fire built into the wall for maximum snuggly effect.

You could make your garage into a workshop, where any other DIY can be done, and tools can be stored. This will need the least work, as it doesn't need to be made nice inside. The garage will need everything clearing out of it though, so there's space in the middle of the room for a work bench.
