Though most guests won't be judging your towels and linen, it's good practice as a host to provide the best living quarters you can, and there's a few things you can do that are cheap and easy to make sure your guests have the best stay:

  1. Get the basics right first. It's the little things that make the difference, so make sure you provide an alarm clock so people know when to get up in the morning, a coaster for if they have a drink at night, and a lamp next to the guest bed.
  2. Clear out your stuff. A guest wants to have space to put their things, so remove any unnecessary belongings from the guest room. Make sure you provide at least a chest of drawers and, preferably, a wardrobe, so your visitors can hang up their clothes while they're staying with you.
  3. Provide some reading material. When your guest has gone to their room to bed, or even if they're just relaxing, make sure they have something to by providing a few magazines and books for them to read. This shows thoughtfulness to your guests, and also means that they won't feel awkward or at a loss while you're preparing dinner.
  4. Make sure there's somewhere to get ready. Put a mirror and a dressing table near a light or window, so your visitors will be able to do their makeup in peace, without having to fight for the bathroom.
  5. Think about the bathroom. Make sure the guest bathroom (or the bathroom the guests will be using if there's only one) is fit for company. Get some clean, fluffy towels for them to use, as well as some new soap and toiletries.
  6. Give them somewhere to sit. While space might be tight, and you might not be able to provide sofas in the guest room, at least get a chair, so they have somewhere to sit down that isn't the bed.
  7. Free up some plug space. Your visitors will more than likely need to charge a phone or laptop, so make sure there's somewhere they can do this, without having to ask, or unplug something that you don't want unplugging.
  8. Respect your guests' privacy. Make sure there's a lock on their bedroom door, and that they can have access to the bathroom without being disturbed.

If in doubt, remember, your guests are on a break. Their time with you should feel like a holiday, in a hotel, not a chore!
