Homebase has launched an online Project Centre to help customers find Create it Yourself inspiration so Annie Henley from Homebase’s Design and Decorating Academy has put together the following tips for you to apply to your own homes.

1) Don't be afraid to create your own look, and keep an eye out for colours and fabrics you like. Looking through interior books and magazines, and browsing shops can help spark inspiration and ideas.

2) Find your 'friendspiration' - take an interest in the design choices made by others. If you love something in a friend's house then ask where they got their ideas from and how they did it.

3) Use the internet as a place to expand your design horizons, whether on Pinterest, Instagram or home interior blogs.

4) Embrace your personal design style and don't be afraid to experiment and develop this style. You can get ideas from everywhere - travel, holidays and the wider world around you are all great sources of inspiration.

5) Go with the seasons and let your surroundings inspire a colour scheme. Pops of colour can change the entire feel of a room, and adding light coloured hues can make a room feel lighter and spring-ready.

6) Understand what you're good at, and what you're not so good at. A 'Create-it-Yourself-er' is happy to focus in on their creativity and not be afraid to ask for help . Talk to an expert such as the Homebase Design & Decorating Academy students in store to help pull a look together.

7) Absorb the world around you by taking photos, so you can keep track of what inspires you. If you like all your ideas to be stored in one place, Pinterest can group all your images together.

8) Make sure you prepare before you start a project, this can prevent you running into trouble further down the line. This doesn't need to be a chore - simple things such as preparing a surface before painting it, or clearing the right space before you begin building something can save you time in the long run. Your local friendly Homebase store can help you make sure you have everything you need.

9) Get creative with your furnishings - painting furniture can transform a room, and give it a new lease of life. You can start of small with something like a picture frame, to build confidence and perfect your painting style using paints such as the Rust-Oleum vintage crackle paint available at Homebase.

10) Use paint in unexpected ways - you don't have to paint the whole of an item, you can paint sections of furniture. Being experimental with painting lets you channel your creative side and create a unique look.
