Every single UK home is playing host to an unwanted guest, dust mites.

Warm, humid conditions, often found in the bedroom provide the perfect environment for dust mite to breed. And coupled with the fact that every night we each lose over a quarter of a litre of moisture and half a kilo of dead skin cells a year, the little critters are thriving in large numbers.

In fact, it is the dust mite’s faeces which can cause allergic reactions and asthma.

Slumberdown, bed specialist, recommends that duvets should be replaced every five years and pillows every two to three years as long as they’ve been washed every six months, to keep dust mites at bay.

David Page, sales and marketing director at Slumberdown explains:

“Dead skin, mites, and mite faecal pellets can make up more than ten per cent of the weight of a three year pillow. To ensure that bedding is free from dust mites, we recommend washing pillows and duvets every six months at 60˚C, the temperature that kills the dust mites.

“Alternatively, if you’ve had your duvet for five years and pillows for almost three, we recommend you replace them altogether. Dust mites can seriously affect the quality of sleep, so it’s important that people clean and replace their bedding.”
