Keep your hands looking young with these tips

Keep your hands looking young with these tips

Hands are often referred to as the window to our age, and when we see celebrities’ hands, like Madonna and Sarah Jessica Parker, it’s easy to see that this statement is in fact true.

But what can you do to ensure you have beautiful hands for years to come, well it’s going to take a little bit of effort, but it’s going to be worth it.

Jill Zander, founder of the Jill Zander Rejuvenation Clinic, brings her essential tips for beautiful hands, plus the in-clinic solutions to banish the stubborn signs of ageing.

Keeping your hands as youthful as your face is now more achievable than ever.

Jill says: “Young hands always look smooth and plump, and sometimes it is a bit of a shock to notice that our hands appear to be ageing fast than our face. This often neglected area is more fragile, meaning it is susceptible to losing firmness and plumpness at an accelerated rate. And unlike our face, our hands have hardly any sebaceous glands. As we age the collagen levels deplete, often resulting in a crepey appearance.

“Many anti-ageing ingredients used on the face are fantastic for holding back the hands of time. Look out for Coenzymen Q10, a wonderful antioxidant, peptides, vitamin C and skin plumping Hyaluronic acid.

“I think many women are unaware of treatments that you can have on the hands including skin peels and laser treatments. They work a treat to help reverse the signs of ageing.”

What ages the hands?

Like any body part, the greatest skin danger is the sun, so it’s vital to use a cream containing an SPF of at least 15. The sun causes brown spots and wrinkling so protect those hands. And remember that, like our face, the hands are the most exposed body part so treat them as you would your face or they will be an age give-away. Hand ageing can begin to show from age 30. Try the pinch test to see if you skin pings back instantly. If it doesn’t, then collagen (which acts like scaffolding on the skin) is lacking.

How to Slow Down Hand Ageing

My top tips to hold back hand ageing are to avoid the sun (unless you have applied SPF), to use a good quality hand cream, to always cover hands in cold weather and NEVER FORGET to use washing up gloves when cleaning or tackling the pots and pans – chemical-laden, astringent cleaning products are not friends to our hands!

Hand Creams

As we get older our hands need constant moisturising because if you do not keep the skin hydrated, the decrease in natural collagen and thinning of the skin makes it look even worse. There are multiple benefits when using a hand cream. Firstly, a good hand cream can act as a barrier to environmental issues, especially if it contains SPF.  Secondly, if the cream contains good quality ingredients they work to fight the signs of ageing and help prevent further damage. Lastly, hand creams tend to be very moisturising so they work to keep the skin soft and plump.

Jill’s top tips for beautiful hands in the clinic

I would recommend microdermabrasion combined with IPL (Intense Pulsed Light). Microdermabrasion will gently slough away the accumulation of dead cells on the surface and will allow the IPL to better target age spots to even out the pigmentation, instantly rejuvenating the hands.

A series of micro-needling treatments will also help stimulate the production of new collagen, followed by Transderm mesotherapy, where we can introduce vitamins and hyaluronic acid to plump the skin on the hands.

Another new treatment I would recommend is the Legato, a great high-tech treatment that uses iPixel radio frequency and IMPACT Ultrasound acoustic vibrations to rejuvenate skin. It resurfaces lines, wrinkles, pigmentation and melasma by effectively stimulating collagen production.

Another favorite is Biomimetic rejuvenation through revolutionary nano-peptide technology using a needle free Transderm mesotherapy procedure to introduce biomimetic peptides, which mimic the function of growth factors to increase collagen and elastin production and increase hydration.

Finally, new Dermalux Tri-Wave therapy has powerful rejuvenation benefits for the skin. The heat free light provides a quick, painless and relaxing way to achieve the healthy, younger looking skin.
