Katniss Everdeen favours braids throughout the films

Braids are perfect to wear for a day, on a night out or even a date, they're ideal whether you want a romantic, edgy or a sexy look.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has hit cinema screens across the UK and Katniss Everdeen, played by Jennifer Lawrence has re-ignited our love for braids.

Here we have some tips on how to recreate the yourself from Gustav Fouche, Senior Stylist at the Michael Van Clarke Salon in Marylebone.

Signature Side Plait

Katniss’ classic look beautifully captures simple femininity and kick ass functionality.

-        To achieve the perfect side plait create a deep side parting and divide your hair up into three sections.

-        Gently French plait the hair, making sure to pick up columns of the hair as you go along, so the plait hugs the side of your head.

-        Continue to plait pulling the right sections tighter so the braid swoops around the lower half of your head.

-        Once the braid reaches the front of the hair, pull in loose front sections of hair and continue to braid the hair forward to then secure with an elastic hair band.

-        Complete the look with Holding Spray to keep your locks in place.

Romance isn’t dead

Get bohemian with loose fishtail braids gently topping a bed of whimsical waves.

-          Divide hair into a middle parting then separate two slim sections level with your temples as you’ll be dealing with one side at a time for now.

-          Take your first section and divide it in two. Grab a third smaller piece from the underside of the right section and connect the smaller piece to the left section, pulling tightly. Do this for two thirds of your hair length and then secure the ends.

-          Repeat the process with your second section, this time taking a smaller piece from the left section and tying under the right. This may feel strange at first but once you’ve got the hang of it, it’s so easy - we promise!

-          Once both sections are braided, bring them together at the back of your head and pin some of the remaining length of hair around the point at which they join, to create a beautiful hair knot.

-          Complete with 3 More Inches Finishing Feed for a glossy and gorgeous look. Voila!

Grown up glamour

Wrap textured plaits into an elegant halo braid for the ultimate wow braid.

-        Wash your hair and use 3 More Inches Volumising Mousse before drying to create volume and texture.

-        Create a deep side parting on top of your hair, then make a zig-zag parting at the back to avoid harsh lines. Tie one side into a pigtail to keep it out of the way.

-        Dutch plait one side of your hair (the same process as French plait but taking first piece of hair under rather than over the next) right to the ends and secure with a hair tie.

-        Repeat on the other side so you are left with two full length plaits, which you can pull at and tease for a more carefree look

-        Bring each plait around to the opposite side of your head, so the ends are level with your ears, then secure using a Kirby grip and a mist of 3 More Inches Holding Spray!

The added bonus of creating a plait is that when the braids are released, you are left with beautiful waves. You can maintain these sexy loose curls with 3 More Inches Life Saver Spray for hair that looks, and feels, naturally nourished.
