So you suffer from temperamental acne?

So you suffer from temperamental acne?

Dr Terry Loong is known as the Skin Energy Doctor, at the Anti-Ageing Beauty & Health Show, held at the London Olympia this past weekend, she discussed hormonal acne and offered some solutions on how to fight it and reveal clearer, brighter skin.

The expert was full of life speaking on stage discussing acne and her passion to help people, saying 80% of people will suffer from acne at some point in their lives so it’s essential we know the causes and how we can treat it.

For women between the ages of 20-50 they’ll find that they get spots on the face, chest, back and arms, with reddish nodules around the mouth and jaw – hormonal acne.

The annoying thing is, it’s more resistant to traditional treatments and it all comes down to a fluctuation of hormones.

So why do we suffer from hormonal acne? Dr Terry said it’s all down to four reasons:

The overproduction of oil

The overgrowth of Propionibacterium Acne bacteria

Sluggish turnover of cells which block the pores

And a defective pore which has changed shape.

If you’re worried about suffering from hormonal acne, it’s time to speak to your parents as most cases are heredity, so if they have it, chances are you will too.

To help treat it though, Dr Terry suggests a holistic treatment which will reduce inflammation and balance the hormones in the body.

So what common hormonal balances are happening in your body?

High cortisol – this affects inflammation and raises blood sugar levels. Try ginseng and green tea to help balance it.

High testosterone – which can cause Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

High Oestrogen/Low Progesterone – this causes poor elimination. To help balance oestrogen levels eat more fibre and brassica vegetables and balance progesterone by eating 2 eggs a day.

To help balance hormonal acne, Dr Terry advises a skin fast were you strip back to using just three products for two weeks. A cleanser in the night time, splash your face with water in the morning, a serum in the night and the morning and a SPF during the day.

She also advises an acne elimination diet for three weeks which sees you eliminate seven sneaky foods; gluten, diary, sugar, coffee, alcohol, peanuts and corn. After the three weeks introduce one of these foods every 3 days and see what difference it makes to your skin.
