Beth Ditto

Beth Ditto

Following in the footsteps of Kate Moss and Pixie Geldof, The Gossip star Beth Ditto is soon to launch her very own clothing line for Evans- but will it be a success?

We only ask because lets be honest, Beth isn't the obvious choice to launch a fashion range, having never really been celebrated for her style choices, yet people are excited about her designer debut.

Why though? Is it because we've finally reached our limit of skinny minnies and their equally impossible fashion ranges, or are we just anticipating her failure with a satisfying smile?

It may interest some of the more savage critics out there to know, that Beth's naked debut on the cover of Love magazine has been proclaimed a huge success, shifting all 65,000 copies on sale.

Again it's the decision to go against the perceived norm of what's fashionable or stylish. Why shouldn't a big girl go naked, or indeed design a fashion range for larger ladies?

Kate Moss may be the conventional definition of fashion, and her collections have proved a success for Topshop, but would she do as well designing a range for plus size customers?

No, probably not. Kate works because she speaks to the young teenage crowds and showcases looks which they can copy.

Those teenagers who are maybe on the larger side shouldn't have to feel bad because they can't pull off Kate's range, and that is where Beth comes in.

If she can produce an eclectic, fun and fashionable range for her customers then people will flock to Evans for her style. If she goes OTT with the crazy neon colours and clashing prints, then she won't achieve the kind of success that Kate has.

Even Pixie Geldof's range for New Look failed to capture the imagination, despite using herself as a model for the collection, it was just too quirky.

Lily Allen's range famously bombed during her Chav Chic days, because although people admired her style on her, they didn't want to look like a carbon copy, and that's all Lily's collection was.

Beth could fall into a similar trap if she just models the clothes on her own style, as people don't want to look exactly like her, they just want to use her as inspiration to create their own look.

She's rumoured to be launching her collection later this month and ironically enough the man behind Kate's success for Topshop, Philip Green is also the brains behind Beth's signing for Evans.

Coincidence perhaps? We think not, especially considering Beth and Kate are such good friends these days too. So the question remains, will she be a roaring success, or fade into obscurity with her fashion range? Let us know what you think...
