Brigitte Bardot

Brigitte Bardot

French sex siren Brigitte Bardot was known for two things back in the 60s; her fabulous bouffant hair and outselling pictures of the Eiffel Tower, when she was photographed in a corset for a postcard.

In the 50s, Bardot was considered as too risque for Hollywood and as such her films were only allowed to be shown if they were clearly labelled as "European."

Don't forget that this was the Doris Day era of film and Bardot's sexy look was not only frowned upon, but was almost considered indecent!

However as we entered the swinging 60s, Bardot was voted honorary sex-goddess of the decade. In fact, there was a widely obscure but popular claim that Brigitte Bardot, as an actress, did more for the French international trade balance than the entire French car industry.

She joined the elite ranks of Marilyn Monroe and Jackie Kennedy in becoming a subject for Andy Warhol paintings during the 60s, which cemented her as a style icon of that decade.

Her style was a much discussed subject of the era, after she took part in several photoshoots wearing a bikini. She not only popularised the look for women everywhere, but was also credited with making St Tropez a glamorous destination after visiting it with a series of boyfriends.

Brigitte also brought into fashion the choucroute hairstyle, which is known to many as the beehive. This is a look that has resurfaced over the years on many different celebrities, and who can blame them? It's the epitome of old style sexy glamour.

Claudia Schiffer, Jessica Simpson and more recently Cheryl Cole have been seen sporting the backcombed sexy bed head, which is as timeless now as it was back then. It's a popular choice on the catwalk too, with designers rocking the 'done' women look for AW08, which includes plenty of backcombing and tons of hairspray to hold it in place.

Brigette was also credited with making gingham clothes popular after wearing a checkered pink dress to her wedding to Jacques Charrier in 1959.

As with every decade, each fashion season it is revisited and updated to reflect modern trends, but Bardot's timeless sex appeal and fierce attitude has cemented her place in fashion history.
